How do I become an OPA member?

Simply fill out the Membership Form and return to the Registration Chairperson along with the applicable fees.

What are the benefits of being a member?

Becoming a member of the Ontario Powerlifting Association registers a person with the CPU (Canadian Powerlifting Union) which is affiliated with the IPF (International Powerlifting Federation).  As an OPA member, you will receive a CPU Card which must be presented at every contest during equipment check-in.

 

Only members of the Ontario Powerlifting Association can lift at the following Ontario Championships:

bulletOntario Master/Junior
bulletOntario Bench Press
bulletOntario Senior


Among some of the other benefits are:

bulletthe ability to compete in various IPF affiliated competitions. Example: an open contest sanctioned by USA Powerlifting.

bulletthe privilege to break Ontario records
bulletoption to be included in the Ontario Top 10 ranking list

Who can be a member of the Ontario Powerlifting Association?

bulletResidents of Ontario can be full members of the Ontario Powerlifting Association.
bulletLifters in other provinces must register with the association in their province
bulletNon-residents of Canada must register with the CPU Registration Chairperson directly
bulletAny person from anywhere can be an Associate member.

How to enter an OPA Sanctioned contest

Hosting an OPA competition

To run a competition for the first time, it would be a good idea to contact your Regional Chairperson or the Referee Chairperson to ensure that the appropriate equipment and resources are available and to help with the logistics for the first time.

 

In terms of administration, the following must take place:

bulletMeet Director must become an OPA member
bulletOPA member must register a club
bulletMeet Director must sanction the contest with the Ontario Powerlifting Association

Type of OPA records

The Ontario Powerlifting Association keeps records for Men and Women in these categories:

bulletSub Junior
bulletJunior
bulletOpen
bulletMaster I
bulletMaster II
bulletMaster III

Steps required to obtain an OPA record

To hold a record in the Ontario Powerlifting Association, you must do two things after you break the record:

bulletbe drug tested
bulletsend a Record Application form to the Records Chairperson within 30 days

 

Also ensure that all referees have signed the official score sheet as this is required to make everything official. 

 

Note: Two Category I OPA or higher referees must officiate record attempts.

What if I want to break a National Record?

To break a National record, higher level referees are required.  Notify the meet director to determine if the appropriate referees and drug testing can be arranged.

Badges - Classification Awards Program

Purpose of the Classification Awards Program:

bulletTo give meet promoters some guidelines for qualifying totals when setting up local, provincial and national contests.
bulletFor example, there can be specific contests for Class IV, Class III and/or Class II, etc.
bulletTo provide an incentive program for novice lifters.
bulletTo provide recognition to those who have achieved status in their sport.
bulletThe classification totals will be subject

 

Members can apply for a Badge Award when a Class level has been reached.  Fill out a Badge Application form and send to the Records Chairperson to receive a Badge.
